Activity Objective: To develop the fundamental skills and techniques of ski touring, enabling participants to move independently and confidently off-piste.
The course will cover the following topics in detail:
Introduction to materials and equipment
Avalanche bulletin, snow science, and avalanche awareness
Basic meteorology, navigation, and GPS use
Itinerary planning: snow and weather conditions, terrain, and human factors
Risk reduction strategies
Avalanche self-rescue and emergency management through practical simulations
Uphill progression techniques with skins: alternate steps, special steps, kick turns, switchbacks, and advanced turn techniques
Off-piste downhill techniques: kick turns, carved turns, stem turns, guided and jump turns
Choosing the best line both uphill and downhill
Planning, leading, and managing a ski touring outing
Duration: 3 days
Prerequisites: Aerobic fitness for 1,000 m of positive elevation gain and ability to ski on red slopes.
Required equipment and accessories: Backpack, helmet, ski boots, skis with ski touring bindings, poles, climbing skins, avalanche transceiver, shovel, and probe. Self-rescue devices can be rented from the organization. A complete list of clothing, accessories, and detailed equipment will follow.
The fee includes: Logistical organization, guidance and instruction by a certified Alpine Guide, and use of shared safety equipment.
The fee does not include: Transfers, meals, accommodation, any lift tickets, and anything not specified under “The fee includes.”
