Dente del Gigante: Iconic Alpine Climb

The Dente del Gigante is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable peaks in the Mont Blanc Massif. Its unmistakable profile attracts not only climbers but also anyone visiting Courmayeur or Punta Helbronner to admire the spectacular high-mountain scenery. The ascent via the normal route is facilitated by a series of fixed ropes, making the Dente accessible. It is possible to complete the climb in a single day using the first cable car.

From Rifugio Torino, we put on crampons and, roped together, cross the Gigante Glacier to reach the base of the Gengiva. We then tackle a mixed snow-rock section, which in about an hour leads to the base of the granite tower of the Dente. From the base, moving west along the wall, fixed ropes allow us to climb the Burgener slabs. Here, climbing difficulties reach around grade 5, but the ropes make progression easier.

Pitch by pitch, we reach the sub-peak, with a breathtaking view of the summit’s exposure. A short descent leads to a small col, from which a 10-meter climb finally allows us to embrace the Madonnina statue at the top. The descent is done via rappels to the Salle à Manger, then on foot back to Rifugio Torino along the ascent route.
