Rochefort Ridge: A Classic Mont Blanc Traverse
The environment and panoramic views are simply unique, ranging from the summit of Mont Blanc to the Grandes Jorasses and all the surrounding peaks. The large overhanging cornices along much of the climb give the feeling of moving on true sky-high balconies.
PROGRAM:
Day 1: Meet the guide and transfer to Courmayeur. Equipment check and ascent via the Punta Helbronner Skyway cable cars to Rifugio Torino (3,375 m). Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Early morning departure from Rifugio Torino, crossing the upper part of the Glacier du Géant to reach the steep mixed section known as the “Gengiva” at the base of the Dente del Gigante. From here, turning northwest, we follow the ridge crest to the final exposed and challenging rock steps. Descent follows the ascent route back to Courmayeur via cable cars.
Elevation gain and loss: 800 m Estimated duration: approx. 6 h 50 min
Climb information: From Rifugio Torino, the route follows the same access path as the Dente del Gigante, crossing slopes up to 50° and mixed terrain with loose rock, including sections up to grade II. From the “Gengiva,” the ridge involves continuous up-and-down sections heading northwest. Exposed stretches along the crest require care around the large cornices, leading to the final rock steps up to grade III+ to reach the summit. Difficulty: AD+
