Snow Gully Course

Objective: To teach the basic educational and technical skills needed to move independently and safely roped on winter terrain and snow gullies.

Topics covered:

  • Planning: snow and weather conditions, terrain, and human factors

  • Risk mitigation

  • Introduction to equipment, materials, and accessories

  • Avalanche transceiver, shovel, and probe

  • The safety chain

  • Basic knots

  • Anchors and protection

  • Belay stations

  • Rope management

  • Roped team techniques

  • Pitch climbing techniques

  • Techniques for moving together in a team

  • Rappelling

  • Snow anchors

  • Walking and climbing techniques: general principles, motor patterns, technical terrain movement, and classical crampon techniques

  • Tactics and strategy

Prerequisites: Aerobic fitness for approximately seven hours of mountain activity

Required equipment and accessories: Helmet, harness, two 3 m slings, one 1.3 m autoblock sling, two D-shaped carabiners, two HMS carabiners, complete belay device system (bucket + HMS carabiner + oval carabiner). A complete list of clothing, accessories, and equipment will follow.

The fee includes: Logistical organization, guidance and instruction by a certified Alpine Guide, use of shared safety equipment

The fee does not include: Transfers, meals, accommodation, any lifts, and anything not specified under “The fee includes.”
